ChatGPT prompt for IELTS writing

This prompt gives criterion-based feedback on an IELTS Writing response while preserving your intended meaning. Use it to diagnose one Task 1 or Task 2 draft before revising it yourself.

PromptOpen ChatGPTOpen Claude
Act as an IELTS Writing tutor. Assess my response against the public IELTS Writing criteria, but do not invent a band score certainty or rewrite ideas I did not intend. Preserve my meaning, examples, and position unless I ask to change them.

My materials:
- Task type and exact prompt: [IELTS TASK]
- My draft: [MY DRAFT]
- Target band and test date, if known: [TARGET AND TIMING]
- Facts, data, or examples I am allowed to use: [ALLOWED CONTENT]
- Areas I find difficult: [DIFFICULTIES]

First, state whether this is Task 1 Academic, Task 1 General Training, or Task 2, and identify the response obligations. For Task 1 Academic, check for a clear overview and accurate comparison of key features rather than a list of every figure. For Task 1 General Training, check purpose, tone, and coverage of every bullet point. For Task 2, check that the position is clear, each body paragraph has one developed main idea, and examples support rather than replace reasoning.

Produce: (1) a concise criterion-by-criterion diagnosis for task achievement or response, coherence and cohesion, lexical resource, and grammatical range and accuracy; (2) a prioritized revision plan of no more than six changes; (3) line-level corrections for the most important 8 to 12 language issues, showing original wording, correction, and reason; and (4) an improved outline using only my permitted content. Do not write a memorized template or add statistics, personal stories, or citations I have not provided.

Ask up to 3 clarifying questions only if a required input is missing. Before answering, verify that every suggested content change answers the exact task and that corrections do not alter my intended meaning. Flag any claim in my draft that is unsupported by [ALLOWED CONTENT].

[IELTS TASK]Paste the exact IELTS Writing task and state whether it is Academic or General Training if known.Academic Task 1: The chart shows the percentage of households with broadband access in three countries from 2010 to 2020. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features.
[MY DRAFT]Paste your full draft exactly as you wrote it.The chart illustrates broadband users in three countries. Overall, all countries increase, but Country C was more highest. In 2010 A had 45%, B 38% and C 52%. By 2020 the figures were 78%, 74% and 81%.
[TARGET AND TIMING]State your target band and test date, or write that neither is set.Target band 7.0; test in five weeks.
[ALLOWED CONTENT]List source figures, chart details, personal examples, or facts you want the revision to retain.Use only the chart figures in the prompt: 2010 values 45%, 38%, 52%; 2020 values 78%, 74%, 81%.
[DIFFICULTIES]Describe the parts of IELTS writing you find hardest, such as planning, grammar, overview paragraphs, or time management.I struggle to write an overview and often make article and comparative-form errors.

How to use

  1. Paste the exact task before your draft, because the assessment criteria depend on the task type and every instruction in the question.
  2. Compare the feedback against the original question, then revise the two highest-priority issues before changing individual word choices.
  3. For Task 1, check that your overview identifies major trends or differences; for Task 2, check that every paragraph advances your position.
  4. Follow up with: “Give me a 40-minute timed practice plan for this task type and one new question that targets my two weakest areas.”

Variations

Task 1 planner

Use this before writing an Academic Task 1 answer.

Variation
Help me plan an IELTS Academic Task 1 response from this visual-data task: [TASK]. Data and labels: [DATA]. My target band: [TARGET BAND]. Produce a four-paragraph outline: introduction, overview, body paragraph 1, and body paragraph 2. Select only the most meaningful trends, comparisons, extremes, or changes; do not list every number. Include a short list of accurate comparison language suited to the data. Do not invent causes, facts, or figures absent from the visual. Ask up to 3 questions only if necessary. Check that the overview contains no unnecessary detail and every figure in the plan matches my supplied data.

Task 2 planner

Use this before writing an IELTS essay.

Variation
Plan an IELTS Writing Task 2 essay for this exact question: [ESSAY QUESTION]. My position: [POSITION]. Examples I can honestly use: [PERMITTED EXAMPLES]. Target band: [TARGET BAND]. Create an introduction plan, two body-paragraph plans, and a conclusion plan. For each body paragraph, give one main claim, reasoning steps, and a limited supporting example. Identify the question type and make sure the plan addresses every part of it. Do not add research, statistics, quotations, or experiences I did not give you. Ask up to 3 clarifying questions only if required inputs are missing. Check that the position stays consistent and that examples support the reasoning rather than replace it.

Grammar error log

Use this after several practice essays reveal repeat mistakes.

Variation
Analyze this IELTS Writing error log or marked draft: [MARKED WRITING]. Task type: [TASK TYPE]. My target band: [TARGET BAND]. Identify the 5 highest-impact recurring grammar or word-choice patterns, not every isolated mistake. For each pattern, show two corrected examples from my writing, explain the rule in plain language, and create three short practice sentences with answer keys. Keep my intended meaning. Do not claim the exercises alone predict an IELTS band. Ask up to 3 questions only if a required input is missing. Before answering, check that each correction is grammatically valid and appropriate for the task's formal tone.

Tips

  • Practice from exact prompts and under the task's time limit; a polished untimed answer does not reveal planning and accuracy problems that appear in the test.
  • For Task 1, select and compare the main features before writing details; an overview should not merely repeat that a chart changed.
  • For Task 2, answer the precise question type before drafting, because discussion, opinion, problem-solution, and advantages-disadvantages questions require different coverage.
  • Keep an error log by pattern, such as articles before singular count nouns or unclear reference words, rather than collecting random corrected sentences.

FAQ

Can AI give me an exact IELTS band score?

It can provide a criterion-based estimate and explanation, but it cannot reproduce official marking conditions or guarantee a score.

Should I use memorized IELTS essay templates?

A simple structure is useful, but memorized language can make an answer sound formulaic and may not answer the specific prompt. Build paragraphs around the task and your actual reasoning.

Can AI write a model answer for me?

It can show an outline or a practice model, but learn from its structure and verify facts. Your test response must be your own work.
