Claude prompt for a resume and cover letter

This prompt produces a targeted resume and cover letter for one job using only your real experience. Use it after you have the job posting and a rough record of your work history.

Create a tailored resume and cover letter for the role below. Use only facts in my materials; do not invent metrics, tools, titles, dates, degrees, employers, or accomplishments.

[JOB POSTING]
[WORK HISTORY AND ACHIEVEMENTS]
[EDUCATION AND CREDENTIALS]
[CAREER CONTEXT]
[VOICE OR CONSTRAINTS]

First, extract the 6-10 most important requirements from the posting and map each to supporting evidence in my history. Treat repeated responsibilities, required qualifications, and stated outcomes as higher priority than generic culture language. If the posting uses an applicant-tracking-system term that my experience genuinely supports, use that exact term naturally.

Then produce two deliverables.

1. Resume: one or two pages in reverse-chronological order. Include a 2-3 line professional summary, core skills grouped into sensible categories, and experience bullets. For each recent role, write 3-5 bullets using action + scope + result where evidence exists. Prioritize the role's most relevant work; do not turn every duty into a claim of impact. Keep dates, employer names, titles, education, and credentials exactly as supplied. Mark optional details in [brackets] rather than guessing.

2. Cover letter: 300-400 words with a specific opening, two body paragraphs each connecting one concrete achievement to one requirement from the posting, and a short close. Do not restate the resume, flatter the company vaguely, or claim passion without evidence.

Before answering, self-check that every metric and claim is supported by my notes, and that the resume makes the top three job requirements easy to find. Ask up to 3 clarifying questions only if a required input is missing; otherwise provide the drafts directly.

Variations

Career changer

Use this when your prior titles do not closely match the target role.

Variation
Write a career-change resume and 350-word cover letter for [TARGET ROLE] using [TRANSFERABLE EXPERIENCE], [JOB POSTING], and [EDUCATION OR TRAINING]. Identify the target role's five essential capabilities, then translate my experience into evidence for them without relabeling my past job titles. Lead with the most relevant transferable work, explain the transition once in the cover letter, and flag any requirement I cannot honestly support. Ask up to 3 questions only if needed.

ATS resume

Use this when an online application will be screened before a person reads it.

Variation
Tailor my resume to [JOB POSTING] using [CURRENT RESUME] and [VERIFIED ACHIEVEMENTS]. Produce a one-page, ATS-readable resume with standard headings, no tables, columns, icons, text boxes, or skill ratings. Incorporate exact posting language only where it truthfully describes my experience. Put the most relevant keywords in the summary, skills, and evidence-based bullets. Then list missing requirements separately; do not fabricate them. Ask up to 3 questions only if necessary.

Executive application

Use this for director, VP, or head-of-function roles.

Variation
Draft an executive resume and a 400-word cover letter for [JOB POSTING] from [LEADERSHIP HISTORY], [BUSINESS RESULTS], and [BOARD OR INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE]. Focus on scale, operating cadence, strategic choices, team leadership, financial ownership, and measurable outcomes. Distinguish personal contributions from team results. The resume should open with an executive profile and selected-impact section, then concise reverse chronology. The letter should tie two leadership decisions to the employer's stated priorities. Flag unsupported claims and ask up to 3 necessary questions.

Tips

  • Keep a source list of metrics with their time period and denominator; “improved retention” and “reduced churn by 12% over two quarters” are materially different claims.
  • Mirror the posting’s legitimate terminology, but do not add a tool to the skills section because you could learn it later.
  • For a cover letter, select two requirements that matter most and offer evidence for each; a list of every qualification reads like a resume in paragraph form.
  • Use a plain-text resume structure for application portals, then make a separately formatted version for direct email applications.

FAQ

Can AI write my resume if I have no measurable results?

Yes. Provide scope, frequency, complexity, stakeholders, and deliverables. Do not turn routine responsibilities into invented percentages or revenue figures.

Should the cover letter repeat resume bullets?

No. It should interpret two or three relevant examples and explain why they matter for this role.

How tailored should each application be?

The summary, skills order, selected bullets, and cover letter should change for materially different roles; dates and factual history should not.
