ChatGPT prompts for a resume from LinkedIn

This prompt extracts relevant evidence from your LinkedIn profile and reshapes it into a targeted resume. Use it when your profile is current but your resume is outdated or incomplete.

Turn my LinkedIn profile into a targeted, ATS-readable resume for the job below. Use only facts in my LinkedIn profile and supporting notes. Do not infer skills from job titles, invent metrics, expand an acronym unless my materials support it, or copy endorsements as proof of expertise.

Target job: [JOB POSTING]
LinkedIn profile text: [LINKEDIN PROFILE]
Supporting achievements or corrections: [SUPPORTING NOTES]
Education, certifications, and skills to include: [CREDENTIALS]
Resume constraints: [RESUME CONSTRAINTS]

Start by making a private relevance map: identify the job's major responsibilities, required skills, and preferred qualifications, then connect each to an exact item in my profile or notes. Do not output the map unless a requirement has no support.

Produce a one- or two-page resume with these sections: contact placeholders; a 2-3 line summary; relevant skills; professional experience in reverse chronological order; education and certifications. Rewrite LinkedIn-style descriptions into focused resume bullets. Each bullet should state what I did, the business context or scope, and a verified outcome when available. Put the most relevant work first within each role. Keep titles, employer names, and dates aligned with my LinkedIn profile unless my supporting notes explicitly correct them.

Remove generic LinkedIn language, duplicated skills, first-person phrasing, recommendations, and long lists of duties. Use a clean single-column layout in plain text with standard headings; do not use tables, icons, profile links, or graphics.

Before answering, check for conflicts between profile dates and supporting notes, and flag every target-job requirement not supported by my materials. Ask up to 3 clarifying questions only if an essential detail is missing; otherwise provide the resume followed by a short "Items to verify" list.

How to use

  1. Copy the text of your LinkedIn sections into the prompt instead of sharing a profile link the AI may not be able to open.
  2. Add missing metrics and date corrections in supporting notes before generating the draft.
  3. Compare each resume role with LinkedIn so titles and employment dates stay consistent across both.
  4. Follow up with: "Rewrite the summary for a hiring manager who values renewals, but use only evidence already provided."

Variations

LinkedIn to CV

Use this for applications that require a fuller CV rather than a short resume.

Variation
Convert my [LINKEDIN PROFILE TEXT] and [SUPPORTING RECORD] into a chronological CV for [PURPOSE]. Preserve every employer, title, date, credential, publication, presentation, and project exactly as supported. Organize it into profile, experience, education, certifications, selected projects, and relevant professional activity. Do not force unrelated experience into the target field. Before answering, identify date conflicts and flag any entry that needs a source or more detail.

Profile alignment

Use this when your resume and LinkedIn profile tell different versions of your career.

Variation
Compare my [RESUME TEXT] with my [LINKEDIN PROFILE TEXT] for applications to [TARGET ROLE]. Create a discrepancy table covering titles, employer names, dates, scope, metrics, skills, and education. Then recommend exact, truthful edits to align both documents while retaining appropriate detail for each format. Do not choose one version as correct without evidence. Before answering, flag every difference that could concern a recruiter or create a background-check issue.

LinkedIn About

Use this when you need to update the profile itself before job searching.

Variation
Write a LinkedIn About section for a [TARGET ROLE] search using my [CAREER FACTS], [KEY ACHIEVEMENTS], and [TARGET AUDIENCE]. Produce 180-230 words in first person, with a clear opening, 2-3 evidence-backed specialties, and the kind of roles I am pursuing. Do not use claims such as expert, visionary, or proven unless the facts demonstrate them. Before answering, remove unsupported metrics and check that the wording does not conflict with my existing titles and dates.

Tips

  • Treat LinkedIn as a source document, not a finished resume; profile descriptions are usually broader and less selective than application bullets.
  • Correct titles and dates in both places before applying, especially after promotions within the same company.
  • Do not turn LinkedIn skill endorsements into resume claims unless you can point to work that demonstrates the skill.
  • Keep your LinkedIn About section more human and narrative than your resume summary, while keeping the factual foundation identical.

FAQ

Can I paste a LinkedIn URL instead of the profile text?

Paste the text. A chat tool may not be able to access your profile or may miss sections behind login.

Should my LinkedIn profile match my resume word for word?

No. They should agree on facts, but the resume should be shorter and tailored to one role.

Can AI add metrics that make my LinkedIn work sound stronger?

Only add numbers you can verify. If metrics are unavailable, describe the scope and work accurately without fabricating results.
