ChatGPT prompts for job seekers

This page gives job seekers a practical set of prompts for the work that happens between searching and accepting an offer. Use the prompt that matches your current stage, and keep every claim tied to your real experience.

PromptOpen ChatGPTOpen Claude
Create a personalized job-search prompt pack for me that I can reuse in ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini. Do not invent achievements, degrees, tools, contacts, job openings, or fit for a role.

My background and proof points: [BACKGROUND]
My target roles and employers: [TARGET ROLES]
My constraints and preferences: [CONSTRAINTS]
My current stage and materials: [CURRENT STAGE]

Produce six copy-paste prompts, each with bracketed fields I can fill in later:
1. Target-role and company prioritization
2. Resume tailoring to one job description
3. Cover-letter or application-question drafting
4. Networking and informational-interview outreach
5. Interview story and question preparation
6. Post-interview follow-up and pipeline tracking

Each prompt must tell the AI what source material to use, what output format to produce, and what it must not invent. Include the specific quality checks appropriate to that task: resume claims must map to posting requirements; outreach must not imply a relationship; interview stories must use real details; follow-ups must not overstate interest or commitments.

For each prompt, add a one-sentence note on when to use it and one follow-up message that improves its first output. End with a simple weekly dashboard listing applications, tailored applications, conversations, interviews, and follow-ups due.

Before answering, check that the pack fits my target roles and current stage and that no prompt encourages unsupported claims. Ask up to 3 clarifying questions only if a required input is missing.

PlaceholderWhat to enterExample
[BACKGROUND]Summarize your experience, outcomes, skills, education, and portfolio evidence.Operations analyst with three years in a regional logistics firm; built a routing report that cut weekly manual work by six hours.
[TARGET ROLES]List the roles, employers or industries, seniority, and location you are pursuing.Business operations analyst roles at supply-chain software companies in Chicago or remote.
[CONSTRAINTS]State compensation, location, work authorization, schedule, travel, and timing requirements.Need US-based remote or Chicago hybrid work; target base pay of $80,000 or more.
[CURRENT STAGE]Describe your resume, profile, active applications, interviews, network, and immediate need.Resume exists but is generic; LinkedIn updated; no interviews; can spend eight hours weekly on the search.

How to use

  1. Paste your facts once, then save the six prompts in a document or notes app.
  2. For each application, paste the real job description and your source resume before asking for tailoring.
  3. Check that every bullet, message, and interview story remains true and can be explained with details.
  4. Follow up with: “Score this output against the source materials and rewrite only claims that are unsupported or too vague.”

Variations

Resume tailoring

Use this when you have one job posting and need a truthful targeted resume.

Variation
Tailor my resume for this job posting: [JOB POSTING]. My source resume and achievement notes are [SOURCE MATERIAL]. First map the posting’s five most important requirements to supported evidence. Then produce a revised summary and up to six bullets, retaining truthful titles, dates, and metrics. Flag requirements with no evidence instead of filling gaps. End with a list of every changed phrase and its source support.

Interview answers

Use this when you need practice before a specific interview.

Variation
Prepare me for an interview for [ROLE] at [COMPANY] using [JOB POSTING] and my evidence [BACKGROUND]. Identify six likely competencies, then help me build one real STAR story for each where possible. Ask for missing details rather than inventing them. Include five questions I can ask that reveal team priorities, success measures, and constraints. End with a 30-minute practice agenda.

Offer comparison

Use this when you are comparing a job offer with alternatives.

Variation
Create a neutral offer-comparison worksheet for [OFFER OR OFFERS] against my priorities [PRIORITIES] and current alternative [ALTERNATIVE]. Separate confirmed terms from assumptions, including pay, equity, benefits, scope, manager, location, and risk. List questions to clarify before deciding and a negotiation-preparation checklist. Do not give legal or tax advice or treat estimated equity value as guaranteed compensation.

Tips

  • Keep a master achievement inventory with context, action, result, measurement method, and stakeholders; it makes tailoring faster without stretching facts.
  • Match a resume to the actual work in the posting, not only repeated keywords, and leave a real gap visible when one exists.
  • Use a tracker that records the next action and date for every conversation; networking momentum is lost most often in neglected follow-ups.
  • Prepare interview stories around decisions, trade-offs, and results you can defend, rather than polished statements that cannot survive a follow-up question.

FAQ

Should I let AI write my whole resume?

Use it to organize and tailor truthful source material. You remain responsible for every metric, title, and claim submitted to an employer.

Which job-search task should I start with?

Start with role targeting and a clear evidence inventory, then tailor materials for a smaller set of credible opportunities.

Can I use the same prompts for Claude and ChatGPT?

Yes. Provide the source material each time and use the quality checks in the prompt rather than relying on a model to infer missing details.
