How it works

  1. Enter your name, job title, manager, company and last working day, plus anything you want to thank them for or offer during the handover.
  2. Pick a tone (warm, neutral, brief, or professional even though you're unhappy) and choose email or formal letter. Click Write my letter.
  3. Fill in any [bracketed] gaps, tell your manager in person first, then send the letter to confirm it in writing.

Example 1: input

Your details: Jordan Lee, Marketing Coordinator at Brightside Dental Group. Manager is Carla. Last day Friday, October 17. 4 years there. Carla gave me my first real job and let me run the rebrand. I'm moving to Denver. Happy to document the social media workflows before I go.

Format: Email

Example 1: output
Subject: Resignation: Jordan Lee, Marketing Coordinator Hi Carla, I'm writing to resign from my role as Marketing Coordinator. My last day will be Friday, October 17. I'm moving to Denver, and it's been a hard decision to leave. You gave me my first real job and trusted me to run the rebrand, which I'm still proud of. I've learned more in these four years than I expected to. Before I go, I'll write up the social media workflows so whoever takes over has everything in one place. Tell me what else would help. Thank you for everything. Jordan Lee Before you send: Tell Carla in person or on a call first, so this email confirms what she already knows. Check your offer letter or handbook for the required notice period.
Example 2: input

Your details: Sam Patel, Senior Accountant, Northwind Logistics. Manager: Dana Ruiz. Last day November 7.

Tone: Brief (only what's required)

Format: Formal letter

Example 2: output
[Date] Dana Ruiz Northwind Logistics Dear Dana, Please accept this letter as notice of my resignation from my position as Senior Accountant. My last working day will be November 7. Thank you for the opportunity to work at Northwind Logistics. Sincerely, Sam Patel Before you send: Check your contract for the required notice period and whether it must be given in writing.
Example 3: input

Your details: Alex Kim, Support Team Lead. Manager Greg. Last day in two weeks. Honestly the last 6 months have been awful, constant reorgs and no support from leadership. I just want out without burning bridges.

Tone: Leaving on bad terms (stay professional)

Format: Email

Example 3: output
Subject: Resignation: Alex Kim, Support Team Lead Hi Greg, I'm resigning from my position as Support Team Lead. My last day will be [last working day]. Over the next two weeks I'll hand over my open tickets and team responsibilities, and I'll do what I can to make the transition smooth for the team. Thank you for the opportunity. Best regards, Alex Kim Before you send: Fill in the exact date, two weeks from when you send it. Save the reorg feedback for an exit interview, where it can be heard, not a letter that stays in your file.

Tips for better results

  • Put your exact last day in the first paragraph. It's the one detail HR and payroll will act on.
  • Keep reasons out unless they're positive. A resignation letter stays in your file, and "I'm moving to Denver" is enough.
  • Offer only the handover help you can deliver. "I'll document the workflows" is better than a vague promise you can't keep.
  • Talk to your manager before you send it. The letter should confirm a conversation, not replace it.

FAQ

Is this resignation letter generator free?

Yes. Enter your email once to use it (you'll also get Something Big, our free weekly AI newsletter, and you can unsubscribe anytime). There's no account and no credit card.

How much notice should I give?

Two weeks is common in the US, but your contract, handbook or local law may say otherwise. Check those first. The generator uses the last day you give it and never calculates one for you.

Should I say why I'm leaving?

Only if the reason is positive or neutral, such as a move, a new role or study. Complaints belong in an exit interview or a conversation, not in a letter that stays on file.

Is an email resignation OK?

At most workplaces, yes, as long as you've told your manager first. Choose Formal letter if your company expects a signed letter or you work somewhere more traditional.
