ChatGPT prompts for a business resume

This prompt produces a role-specific business resume that connects your real achievements to the employer’s needs. Use it when tailoring an existing resume for a specific opening.

PromptOpen ChatGPTOpen Claude
Rewrite my resume for the target business role using only my verified experience. Make it easy for a recruiter and hiring manager to see how my background meets the role’s priorities. Do not invent employers, titles, degrees, tools, scope, revenue, percentages, dates, or outcomes.

JOB POSTING: [JOB POSTING]
CURRENT RESUME: [CURRENT RESUME]
VERIFIED ACHIEVEMENTS: [VERIFIED ACHIEVEMENTS]
CAREER CONTEXT: [CAREER CONTEXT]
LOCATION AND FORMAT NEEDS: [FORMAT NEEDS]

Produce an ATS-readable resume of no more than two pages. Include:
1. A targeted professional summary of 3 to 4 lines that reflects the target role without copying the posting.
2. A skills section using only skills I can substantiate, grouped by business function.
3. Reverse-chronological experience. For each recent role, prioritize bullets that connect one real achievement to a stated requirement. Start bullets with strong verbs; include scope, decision, action, and result where supported.
4. Education, certifications, and selected earlier experience only when relevant.
5. A short “gaps or questions” list after the resume identifying requirements I cannot credibly claim.

Translate internal jargon into terms a hiring manager will understand, but preserve accuracy. Do not restate job descriptions. Do not optimize solely for keywords: use exact relevant terms naturally where they describe my work. Avoid first-person pronouns, tables, columns, graphics, and skill ratings.

Before answering, check every quantitative claim against my verified achievements. Then check that at least two top requirements from the posting are tied to specific experience bullets, or flag the missing evidence. Ask up to 3 clarifying questions only if a required input is missing.

How to use

  1. Paste the entire posting, especially required qualifications and the work the person will own.
  2. Add a separate achievement list with only numbers and outcomes you can defend in an interview.
  3. Check the draft against the posting for the two or three requirements that matter most, not every keyword.
  4. Follow up with: “Create a matching interview story bank using only these resume bullets and flag evidence I still need.”

Variations

Executive resume

Use this for director, VP, or other leadership-level applications.

Variation
Rewrite my executive resume for [TARGET ROLE] at [TARGET COMPANY TYPE]. Here is the job posting: [JOB POSTING]. My career history and verified outcomes are [CAREER HISTORY]. Produce a two-page ATS-readable resume emphasizing organizational scope, decisions owned, cross-functional leadership, and durable business outcomes. Tie achievements to the role’s top requirements without copying the posting. Do not invent board exposure, P&L responsibility, headcount, metrics, or strategy ownership. Include a list of executive-level claims that need stronger proof.

Career change

Use this when your past titles do not match the role you want.

Variation
Create a resume for a transition from [CURRENT FIELD] to [TARGET FIELD]. The target posting is [JOB POSTING]. My actual experience is [EXPERIENCE], and my transferable evidence is [TRANSFERABLE ACHIEVEMENTS]. Produce a one- or two-page ATS-readable resume that leads with relevant capabilities and projects, then preserves accurate titles and dates. Do not rename my jobs or claim direct experience I lack. Include a brief gap analysis and three evidence-building ideas that do not misrepresent my background.

Resume bullets

Use this when the resume structure is sound but bullets need work.

Variation
Rewrite these resume bullets for a [TARGET ROLE] application: [CURRENT BULLETS]. The relevant job requirements are [REQUIREMENTS], and the verified facts behind the bullets are [FACTS]. Return a table with original bullet, revised bullet, requirement addressed, and unsupported detail to remove. Keep each revised bullet under 32 words. Use action, context, and result where evidence supports it. Do not add metrics, tools, or leadership scope that I did not provide.

Tips

  • Match achievements to the employer’s actual work: a dashboard matters because of the decision it improved, not because it existed.
  • If a result lacks a number, use a defensible scope marker such as the teams served, process frequency, or project stage rather than making up a percentage.
  • Keep job titles accurate; use the summary and bullet framing to explain a transition instead of inflating a title.
  • An ATS-friendly resume uses standard headings and simple formatting, but the human reader still needs a visible business narrative.

FAQ

Can AI add keywords to help my resume pass ATS screening?

Yes, when the terms accurately describe your experience. Adding tools or responsibilities you have not used can create an interview problem.

Should I include every job?

Include enough history to show progression and relevant experience. Older or unrelated roles can be compressed unless the posting makes them important.

Can AI write accomplishment metrics for me?

No. Supply verified numbers or use nonnumeric scope and outcomes. A plausible invented metric is still a false claim.
