Help me prepare for an interview using this job description and my real experience.

[JOB DESCRIPTION]
[MY EXPERIENCE]
[INTERVIEW FORMAT]
[CAREER GOAL]
[CONCERNS OR GAPS]

First, extract the 5–7 most important capabilities from the job description. For each, classify it as a stated requirement, preferred qualification, or inferred priority, and cite the relevant wording. Then map my experience to each capability in a table with: evidence from my background; the strongest example to use; a truthful gap or uncertainty; and the question an interviewer may ask.

Next, create a preparation plan with: a 60-second “tell me about yourself” outline tailored to this role; four STAR story outlines; five targeted questions I should ask the interviewer; and six likely interview questions with bullet-point answer plans. Each STAR outline must name the situation, my specific actions, a measurable result only if supplied, and what I learned. Prioritize examples that show scope, judgment, collaboration, and results relevant to the role, not a chronological retelling of my resume.

Do not invent metrics, tools, responsibilities, titles, outcomes, or enthusiasm for work I did not do. If I have a gap, help me frame transferable evidence and a credible learning plan without claiming mastery. Do not advise me to misrepresent notice period, work authorization, salary, or references.

Before answering, check that each story is supported by my experience and that every “requirement” truly appears in the posting. Flag unsupported claims or weak matches. Ask up to 3 clarifying questions only if a required input is missing.

How to use

  1. Paste the full posting, including preferred qualifications, and use achievement notes with enough detail to support each story.
  2. Check the capability table for priorities that are inferred rather than explicitly stated.
  3. Practice the answer outlines aloud, replacing generic phrasing with your exact actions and results.
  4. Follow up with: “Act as the hiring manager and ask the six questions one at a time; challenge vague answers.”

Variations

Hiring-manager round

Use this for a first conversation with the person who owns the role.

Variation
Prepare me for a hiring-manager interview for [ROLE] using [JOB DESCRIPTION] and [MY EXPERIENCE]. Identify the six responsibilities most likely to matter in the first 90 days. For each, give one likely question, the factual experience I can use, and a concise answer outline. Add four questions I can ask about success measures, team constraints, stakeholder relationships, and decision rights. Do not invent results or assume the manager's priorities beyond the posting. Check that every answer is grounded in my notes. Ask up to 3 questions only if needed.

Career-change interview

Use this when moving into a new function, industry, or level.

Variation
Help me prepare to explain a career transition from [CURRENT BACKGROUND] to [TARGET ROLE]. Use [JOB DESCRIPTION] and [TRANSFERABLE EVIDENCE]. Produce a 90-second transition narrative, three STAR stories that prove adjacent skills, five likely skepticism questions, and truthful response outlines. Name the gaps openly and give a concrete, non-invented plan for closing each. Do not claim domain experience I lack. Check that each transferable connection is plausible and supported. Ask up to 3 questions only if a required input is missing.

Panel interview plan

Use this when several interviewers will assess different areas.

Variation
Create a panel-interview preparation matrix using [JOB DESCRIPTION], [MY EXPERIENCE], and [PANEL ROLES]. For each panelist, identify likely priorities, two possible questions, the best supported example from my background, and one question I can ask them. Then create three cross-functional STAR stories showing collaboration, tradeoffs, and communication. Do not presume a panelist's agenda beyond their role and the posting. Flag weak evidence and claims lacking proof. Ask up to 3 questions only if essential details are missing.

Tips

  • Treat repeated verbs and outcomes in a posting as priorities; “own,” “influence,” “analyze,” and “deliver” call for different evidence.
  • Prepare STAR stories with the actions you personally took, not only what the team did; interviewers often probe ownership.
  • For a skill gap, state the gap briefly, show adjacent experience, and explain the first practical way you would learn it.
  • Save questions about success measures, decision-making, and current constraints for the interviewer; they reveal more than questions answerable from the website.

FAQ

Can AI tailor interview answers to a job description?

Yes, if you provide the posting and accurate experience notes. It should organize and pressure-test your evidence, not create accomplishments for you.

How many stories should I prepare?

Four to six adaptable stories are usually enough for a standard interview. Choose stories that cover results, conflict, failure or learning, influence, and ambiguity.

Should I address missing qualifications before being asked?

Usually not in the opening answer. Be ready with a direct, truthful response when the gap is relevant, then pivot to transferable evidence and a learning plan.
